We can't go home

Linao's mother peeked through the blinds to see who was knocking on the door. She opened the door a crack, glancing from the grime-covered shoes, to the impossibly stained bottom-half of a jumpsuit, and finally to the dirty face and disheveled hair of a boy about Linao's age.

"Hi -- excuse me -- Is Linao home?"

"Dominick, right? No, she's still at school... She has a late class. She'll come see you later."

She started to close the door when he blurted out, "No! I mean... Could you tell her something for me? Tell her that I need to meet her at the fountain. She'll know where it is. Please?"

Xi was startled at the urgency in his voice. "The fountain? Where is that?"

"She'll know what it means. Please tell her." He shot a glance behind him. "I-- uh... I have to go."

A slurred voice and a loud slamming noise issued from the house.

"Xi, who's at the damn door?"

Linao's mother flushed slightly. "...I'll tell her if I see her."

Dom thanked her and began to walk aimlessly down the darkening streets.

"Dommie, where are we going now? Are we going home?" There was hope in the wind spirit's voice. "Dommie, are you listening? Hey! Are we going home?" It thinned to a whine. "Come on, I wanna see Trini..."

Dom hung his head and stared at the sidewalk.

"...We can't go home."
